TREMENDOUS TRIPLE TITLE EVENT IN SWANSEA: PREVIEW

A tremendous treble of championship fights that will air live on BBC Wales from Swansea this Saturday (May 28th) has all the potential to go down as a classic Welsh domestic fight night. The event, put on by Jamie Sanigar and Sanigar Events has three vacant domestic titles up for grabs, which doesn’t come around too often on the same night.

One of the fights that caught my eye on paper is Morgan ‘Sexual Chocolate’ Jones (14-2-0) against Gerome ‘Bread Maker’ Warburton (9-1-1) for the Welsh Area Middleweight Title. If you’re wondering if that’s because of the colourful aliases, you’re absolutely correct. Humour aside, the pair are extremely evenly matched and have both tasted bitter defeat before. This gives me the indication that both men will leave it all on the line to avoid the realms of emotion that Is attached to a dreaded loss. The bout contested over the distance of 10 rounds will be a first for Warburton, giving a slight bit of experience away to Jones who has been the 10 once before.

The second Welsh Area Title being fought for is in the welterweight division where two undefeated fighters meet. Jake Tinklin (7-0-0) takes on Lloyd Germain (5-0-0) in a huge step-up on both sides compared to their previous opponents. It will be intriguing to see how both will react and adapt to a more lively opponent than ever before, over a 10 round distance. Germain is throwing himself in the deep end having only been the distance of 4 rounds in his career before, But Tinklin balances that out to an extent having only been 6. The two Welshman will battle it out in a hard to call contest but the one of who executes a calm gameplan that goes through the gears while pacing oneself will prevail.

Last but not least is the Celtic Feather Title where Joshua John (4-0-0) and Martin McKeown (6-0-0) meet. This fight is very significant for the domestic featherweight landscape, a win here could put either fighter in a big position to fight another highly ranked opponent in Britain. Both fighters have notable wins on their record beating undefeated opponents in the past. Now they have the chance to do it again for a belt. McKeown has two stoppage wins to his name in his career which may leave John to be cautious knowing his opponent holds that ability in his cabinet.

A heavyweight debutant features on the card and his name is Moses Jolly- based out of Swansea. In his first ever bout he takes on Lamah Griggs (1-1-0) which also raises an eyebrow of curiosity on what to expect.

Also on the card is Ryan Pocock (0-1-0) in his second professional fight. He has to come over extreme adversity in this bout as unfortunately for Pocock, things didn’t go to plan in his pro debut which saw him get stopped by his opponent in the first round. He will be looking to do a complete turn around on the night and set things straight.

Three other fighters including James Atkins, Ted Barnaby and Tom James also enter their second professional bout and will be looking for their second win to go with it.

Lightweight Nathan Howells (3-0-0) is seeking his fourth win on the card having only turned professional last year.

Everyone should get behind and support this card to show our appreciation towards 50/50 matchmaking and watching great domestic title fights - and tune in to watch on BBC Wales.
